Best Free Project Management Tools (Actually Free, 2026)

Most "free PM tool" rankings pad the list with tools that lock the actually-useful features behind a paywall. Here are the ones where the free tier is genuinely workable.

Our criteria

For a tool to make this list: free tier with no time limit, supports at least 5 users without crippling, and the core feature (task tracking) is not gated.

1. ClickUp Free

The best free tier in the category. Tasks, docs, time tracking, dashboards — all functional. Storage is capped but that rarely bites for task management.

2. Trello Free

Personal Kanban for individuals or tiny teams. The free tier limits boards but is unlimited on cards. Simplicity is the selling point.

3. Notion (used as PM)

Free for personal use; very generous for small teams. Not strictly a PM tool but the database views make it serviceable.

4. Asana Free

Up to 10 users on the free tier with list, board, and calendar views. Loses timeline and reporting — fine for small teams that do not need either.

When the free tier stops being enough

Upgrade triggers we have actually seen: needing recurring tasks at scale, needing reporting for leadership, needing custom fields for complex workflows. Until then, free is fine.
